itunes beat me :(

I don’t own an ipod. I do have an mp3 player, which is conveniently is recognized as storage device (yep, regular drive) and in order to copy music to it, i just use my favorite file manager. (yes, i know than newer ipods also can be used this way).
I’m mentioning it in order to explain why i saw itunes for the first time several days ago. Someone asked me to help him with it. He, in turn, got asked by a friend :) . The problem was itunes copied all the music on the computer to the ipod, while only several songs were needed. “It should be easy, after all it’s apple product and it’s famous for it’s ease of use” - I thought to myself (at least that an impression i had).
The plan was simple: remove all the files from the ipod and copy there the needed ones. Well, deleting was simple enough - just select the ipod, press Ctrl-A and then press Del. I was happy :) . But copy was not that easy. I managed to find “control music manually” checkbox, add the needed directory to the library, click “recently added” (btw, i don’t know how to find not recently added music) and drag and drop the files to the ipod. I was happy again, but it was to early to be happy. Now, since i marked “control music manually” checkbox i needed to unmount (eject) the ipod. There’s a button for it, but it just didn’t work - dialog was displayed, saying “Cannot eject ipod, files are in use….”.
I admit, itunes beat me. I’ll stick to simpler mp3 players. Can someone explain what should i have done?
